About the Author: Ray Hamblett – A Life in Nature
Before the digital archives and the "Bloggers" history rounds, there was the field work. This profile, compiled from records including the GLAUCUS website, tracks my journey through the landscapes of Shoreham, Portslade, and Lancing.
The Naturalist's Eye: Notable Discoveries
While I may not be as active in the field today, these records stand as a testament to the importance of "looking closer":
The Early Arrival: Recorded the first Holly Blue Butterfly of the season on a tall Hawthorn in South Lancing—a full month earlier than previous years.

Holly Blue pair matingThe Winter Sleeper: Discovered a hibernating Common Lizard beneath a rotten log at McIntyre’s Field, North Lancing—a vital record for local reptile conservation.
The Fungal Record: Extensive documentation of the Fungi of Lancing Ring, mapping the hidden kingdom beneath our feet long before "The Wood Wide Web" became a popular term.
Community and Conservation
My work hasn't just been about observation, but about sharing that passion with the Adur community:
Ladybirds of Adur: Meticulous tracking of the 7-spot and 14-spot species to monitor biodiversity health.
World Oceans Day: Contributing to exhibitions in Shoreham-by-Sea to bridge the gap between land and sea conservation.
Lancing Ring Nature: Years of data on birds, butterflies, and insects that now serve as a baseline for current rewilding efforts.
🖋️ Author’s Reflection: From Field to File
The internet describes me as a "respected figure in the local environmental community," which is incredibly humbling. I may not be traversing the Beeding Brooks every day now, but my mission remains the same: Documentation.
Whether it’s a 14-spot ladybird in a Lancing garden or a 2 GW data centre in the US, I believe that recording our world is the first step toward saving it. This blog is the next chapter of that legacy—a place where the "Common Lizard" and the "Quantum Computer" can coexist in the same digital album.
